As people age, it’s only natural to start worrying about how to keep your body and your mind functioning as well as possible. And while most people know the basics of how to stay physically fit as they get older, many people don’t know how to keep their minds active.

If this is something that you’re concerned about, either for yourself or for a loved one in an assisted living facility, here are three ways to keep your mind sharp as you near old age.

Commit To Reading More

During all stages of life, the more that you can use your brain and stretch yourself intellectually, the better off you’ll be mentally. This is no different as you get closer to old age. And one simple way to use multiple parts of your brain is to read.

As you read, you’ll continue to work on the speech center of your brain as well as helping to reduce the rates of memory decline. So if you haven’t taken up a habit of reading for fun up until this point, this might be something that you want to try to do as you get older.

You can transition yourself into a love of reading by doing things like reading to your grandchildren, joining a book club, or just finding a time during the day where you can sit down and read anything that has piqued your interest that day.

Consider A Mediterranean Diet

It’s not only what you do with your brain that can help you keep your mind sharp; what you eat and the food that you use to fuel your brain can also have a big impact on this.

If you’re looking for a particular type of diet that is known for being good for neurological health, the Mediterranean diet might be something to look into. This type of diet includes a lot of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and fish.

And studies have found that the more closely you’re able to follow these guidelines for a healthy diet, the lower risk you’ll have for developing things like Alzheimer’s disease.

Embrace New Things In Life

Something else that can help to keep your brain clear and your mind active is constantly working out different parts of the brain by learning new things.

When you learn new things, especially if it requires you to learn how to use a new form of technology or build up a new skill that you didn’t have before, you can help to fight off many of the cognitive changes that often come with aging.

If you’re determined to keep your mental faculties for as long as possible while you’re alive, consider using the tips mentioned above to help you learn how you can best keep your mind sharp as you continue to get older.
